About Leah

My name is Leah Suttner, and I started playing viola in my 6th grade school orchestra. I enjoyed it so much that I started taking lessons and soon joined a local youth orchestra. I continued playing through high school, creating a quartet with friends that played weddings and gigs and moving up in my school and youth orchestras. Carmel High School has an outstanding state championship orchestra program, and the Indianapolis Youth Symphony Orchestra regularly plays professional level music. I’d always wanted to be a teacher, and senior year of high school, I realized I could be an orchestra teacher!

I attended Butler University and graduated with a music education degree. I studied with Csaba Erdelyi, Michael Strauss and Lisa Brooks. I attended a string pedagogy workshop at Indiana University with Mimi Zweig and Brenda Brenner to further my teaching. I taught middle school orchestra for 5 years before deciding to stay home a year with my twin sons.

I now teach private violin and viola lessons to students ages 5 to adult, from brand new beginners to students who are leaders in their school and youth orchestras. I love working with beginners especially, to help them develop a strong foundation. I’d love to help you reach your goals on your instrument!

About Lessons

Lessons are either 30 or 45 minutes per week. Beginners are recommended to start with a 30 minute lesson and more advanced students needing more time might be encouraged to take a longer lesson.

I tailor the lessons to the student’s skill level, needs and interests. I typically use the Suzuki lesson books for material, but also will help students with orchestra pieces or audition material. I am familiar with the method books many orchestra programs use. More advanced students will work on scales, etudes and other material.

I encourage students to participate in their school orchestras and audition for local youth orchestras. I offer several recital opportunities per year. Students are encouraged to participate in ISSMA Solo and Ensemble contest if their school program offers.
